In the 1950's, the United States started to send troops to Vietnam. In the following 25-years the war would create some of the most inhuman actions in the United States history. There were sent almost 3 million US men and women thousand of miles for something they did not even knew any reason for. It was assumed that 2.5 million people from each side were killed.

The Vietnam War arose out of the long conflict between France and Vietnam. Vietnam had been a French colony for about 100 years. During the World War II, France was defeated by German, and Vietnam had become a Japanese colony.

After the World War 2, Japan said that they wanted to help Vietnam and took the North Vietnam’s side. Since almost all of the South Vietnamese generals were French, it had now become a conflict between Japan and France.

In 1945, the communistic Ho Chi Minh made a big military resistance, in co-operation with Japan against France, that he called Vietminh. France tried to get Vietnam back, but in July 1954, after one hundred years of fighting, a defeated France was forced to leave Vietnam. Ngo Dinh Diem became prime minister in South Vietnam, and it was now a war between the North Vietnamese Ho Chi Minh and the South Vietnamese Ngo Dinh Diem.

John F. Kennedy and the rest of the US population were afraid for how the situation would be if the communists won, and started to send troops to Vietnam. They helped Diem and the South Vietnamese people. The war had just begun. In 1965 there were sent almost 23 000 American soldiers to Vietnam and they did what ever they could to kill the guerrillas from Minh’s side. They syringed thousands of tons with toxic chemicals over the Vietnam rain forest. The chemicals destroyed 6-7 miles of rain forest and killed hundreds of Vietnamese communists.

After many attaches from Chi Minh, the American troops had to leave Vietnam. After 30 years of fighting, despite the fact that 2.5 millions Vietnamese and 50 000 Americans had died, North Vietnam won.
