Georgia was originally a spanish colony founded in 1560. But in 1670 the british started fighting to get it. The fighting lasted for about three decades and the spanish was defeated in 1702. It was occupied by the british and in 1724 it got the name province of Georgia, in honor of King George 2nd.

Georgia was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution by signing the 1776 Declaration of Independence, despite a large population of people loyal to the king.

Since Georgia was a relatively new colony at the time compared to the other twelve colonies, Georgia was not as active in the war. Also the army of Georgia was not fully developed.

It was the forth state to ratify the United States constitution on January the 2nd 1788.

In 1861 Georgia joined the confederacy and many major battles of the american civil war took place in georgia. The confederacy, the southern states, fought against The Union, the northern states. The Union won the war in April 1865 as the confederacy surrendered. Many of the confederacy states joined the union soon after the surrender. Georgia was the last confederate state to join, or re-enter The Union. Georgia entered the union on the 15th of june 1870, over two years after the last one before Georgia. The Union is what we today call USA.
